The Appalachian State Mountaineers battle the MTSU Blue Raiders in the New Orleans Bowl in Saturday college football.

The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders ended the season with a 27-25 loss to Alabama-Birmingham in the CUSA championship game after defeating the Blazers a week earlier. Middle Tennessee averaged around 389 yards and 29 points with the #44 passing attack producing 254.5 yards. The Blue Raiders were above average defensively with 373 yards and 25 points allowed so the team was rarely involved in shootouts.

MTSU received a full season from quarterback Brent Stockstill and he completed 70.4% of his throws (299-425) for 3,203 yards with 28 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Ty Lee was the top MTSU receiving option with 828 yards on 67 catches for seven scores while Patrick Smith caught 54 throws for 526 yards and six TD’s.

The Blue Raiders didn’t run the ball much and weren’t efficient when they did with the exception of Chaton Mobley with 579 yards on 115 carries for a five yard average. Terelle West was a secondary option for Middle Tennessee with 288 yards on 62 totes for a 4.7 yard average.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers finished the year at 10-2 which included a 30-19 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette in the Sun Belt title game. Appalachian State totaled 430 yards and 36.7 points behind the #15 ground game that averaged 241 yards. The Mountaineers defense was stingy with 279 yards and just 15.7 points with the third ranked passing ‘D’ giving up under 149 yards.

Zac Thomas paced the ASU passing attack connecting on 62.6% of his throws for 1,862 yards with 18 touchdowns and four picks. Corey Sutton gave the Mountaineer air game explosiveness with 695 yards on 36 catches for a 19.3 yard average and eight TD’s.

It was on the ground that Appalachian State flexed it’s muscle with Darrynton Evans totaling 1,079 yards on 165 carries while Thomas and Marcus Williams Jr. combined for 1,012 yards on 199 totes.

Over is 4-0 in MTSU Blue Raiders last 4 games in December and under is 8-1-1 in MTSU Blue Raiders last 10 games following a straight up loss and under is 7-1-1 in MTSU Blue Raiders last 9 games after allowing more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game. Appalachian State Mountaineers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games and Appalachian State Mountaineers are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games after allowing less than 170 yards passing in their previous game and under is 5-1 in Appalachian State Mountaineers last 6 games on fieldturf.

On first glance this looks like a mismatch favoring Appalachian State but I think MTSU will have enough success in a short passing attack that will keep this close enough to take the points…
